Asher School of the Elements is a boarding school and university for the "gifted" - the secret subset of the population that is capable of controlling one of five elements. Fire, earth, air, water, and electricity. The gift is usually a hereditary one, although occasionally the gifted can pop up in otherwise normal families. Asher itself is a remote city located along the coast of Washington state, populated entirely by the gifted and their families.

From a young age, he has always been a sponge for information. He learns quickly, and what he cannot learn through a book, he will gladly figure out through trial and error. He's smart, yet it's his intelligence that gets him into trouble. He gets bored easily and loses interest in the blink of a eye if something isn't new to him. This has caused countless problems throughout the years, both in his home and school life. If he loses interest, he will move onto something else. If he isn't allowed to, he can and will make a show of it. He is often subtle in his disruptions, unless he is called on or if someone else eggs him on.
Disrespectful and often rude, Quinn makes a point to keep others at a distance. He does not want to get close, so he pushes away those who try to reach out to him. Yet despite the irritation that reads on his soft features, very rarely does he actually lose control over his emotions. True anger, enough so to let more than sparks fly, is rare for him. He has done his best to make sure he remains as grounded as possible, though that does not mean it is impossible to make his control slip.
The reputation he has created for himself over the course of his time at the academy does not show his classmates the true him. He thrives outside of the classroom, tucked away in hopes no one can find him. He completes his studies quickly, often during lunch and then immediately after class if he can escape to his dorm. He immerses himself in his hobbies: continuing his language studies, practicing and covering songs for his Youtube channel, catching up on the latest chapters (manga) or episodes (anime) of whatever he is into that season, etc. It fills up the time he spends alone in his self-imposed isolation.
His hair also changes color and style every couple of months. Hair dye has become his best friend, and he can never keep the same color for too long before his "favorite color" changes again.
HISTORY
One frigid spring morning, a baby was left on the doorstep to an orphanage in Seattle. No one saw who left him there, though no one bothered to question those on the street when the infant's lips were turning blue. He was rushed inside to warm up, and the local authorities were called to search for potential missing babies. No leads turned up, and it was decided that he would remain at the orphanage and put up for adoption as soon as possible.
They named him Quinn. Just Quinn.
It's easy enough for infants to be adopted. A home was found for him within months, and an eager Mrs. Odell eagerly signed the papers and took custody over the little boy.
Mrs. Odell was in her mid-forties, her brown hair already beginning to gray at the roots. She had been a housewife for the past twenty years, yet with her biological children leaving her empty nested, she yearned for what she could no longer have herself. She poured her heart and soul into raising Quinn along with a little girl she adopted only two years later. Mr. Odell, on the other hand, had hair like pepper and a stern face that softened only after he was allowed half an hour to himself to unwind after work. He was a business man through and through, yet Quinn to this day does not know what he actually does. Meetings and stuff? Yeah, that sounds right.
The older Odell siblings rarely came around. They moved out of state as soon as possible, though they tried to make it every other Christmas.
They were normal, or as normal as they could get.
Quinn proved to be too smart for his own mother to manage at an early age, and her attempts to keep him engaged and happy often meant letting him do whatever made him happiest. He always went from one thing to the next; rarely did something interest him for more than a month before he would drop it completely. Children were like that sometimes. When he started school, his teachers were exasperated with him. He would tune them out, and when they would call for his attention, he would fire a question about what they were teaching or take one look at the board and point out any mistakes.
With his mother's leniency toward him, he rarely got in trouble for his actions. Well, serious trouble. A slap on the wrist and he was free to do as he pleased after he finished all his homework.
He was in the fourth grade when his interests began to plant their roots and remain longer than a few weeks. He took an interest in linguistics, or, more specifically, he took an interest in learning a handful of languages: Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and French. His mother easily bent to his will, and he soon found himself in possession of multiple language books. He started with Korean before moving on one by one. Learning by yourself without anyone to practice with made him struggle even after grasping the fundamentals. Japanese was the easiest, but that was only after he 'discovered' anime.
Thankfully, online language courses became more and more popular as time went on, and he moved to those to continue his studies.
Quinn's interests branched into music by the time he reached middle school. They were forced to either take band, orchestra, or choir, and he quickly latched onto choir. His choral director was probably the only teacher who liked him, if only because Quinn actually bothered to pay attention in class and during rehearsals.
The rest of his teachers had to put up with Quinn's antics, and it only got worse once he made a few friends who were far more rowdy and disrespectful. The only difference between him and his friends was that he was actually passing his classes. He would slip them the answers on major tests so they would at least barely pass their classes, though they were eventually caught cheating. Assigned seating was put into play, and Quinn found himself on the opposite side of the classroom.
He was in the eighth grade when it was discovered that he was anything but normal. Perhaps it could have been hidden forever had it not been for a petty argument between one of his friends and someone on the school's football team. A fist was thrown, a fight broke out, and three people ended up in the hospital.
They said it was a lightning strike, that they were lucky to be alive. But, it was a sunny day, not a cloud in the sky.
Within a week, an invitation came in the mail, stating that Quinn was accepted into an academy he had never applied for. His mother did not want another one of her children leaving so soon, but the looks he got from his friends that day were enough to make him accept. He was enrolled to begin his freshman year, so he packed up and began preparing for the big move.
He went alone, his family unable to accompany him for one reason or another. He did not bother with the details.
His first year was relatively quiet, if only because he knew no one and had better things to do than mingle with anyone else. He kept up with his studies, found out he could say goodbye to chargers within the first few months, and started messing around with Youtube as a new hobby. Too bad he only had his phone's camera at the time. Oh well, we all start somewhere.
Quinn started acting up again in sophomore year, if only because grew bored of his classes. Well, that, and he had one teacher he really did not like, so riling them up became a great way to pass time in their class. And get one or five detentions. It's fine.
There was little doubt in his peers' minds that he would continue being a pain for their teachers. Some classes he slept in, others he stared out the window and clicked his pen, and a few he sometimes flat out skipped. He became known for his cute face and sour personality during school hours, and he was perfectly fine with that. It kept people at bay, no one daring to get too close.
So long as he kept it that way, he would never risk seeing the same looks he had seen that day of the 'lightning strike'.
Time slowly passed him by, and eventually Quinn started his senior year. He only had one more year to push through before graduation. One more year to figure out what he was going to do with himself.
