Asher School of the Elements is a boarding school and university for the "gifted" - the secret subset of the population that is capable of controlling one of five elements. Fire, earth, air, water, and electricity. The gift is usually a hereditary one, although occasionally the gifted can pop up in otherwise normal families. Asher itself is a remote city located along the coast of Washington state, populated entirely by the gifted and their families.

for as long as there have been humans, there have been legends of those among them with certain special abilities. in days past, perhaps people did believe. now, very few do. this is very much to the advantage of the gifted, a tiny subset of the population that can control one of five elements. they hide in plain sight among regular people, many living completely normal lives and rarely using their amazing gifts. this comes with its advantages as well as its dangers, as a poorly controlled element has the capacity to kill completely by accident.
for that reason and more, cities like Asher came into existence. travel into the sleepy little city of Asher, Washington is closely monitored. this is a place where it is not uncommon to see displays of ones ability on the street, aiding the gifted in their everyday lives. in fact, the city is filled entirely with the gifted and their families. Asher Academy was founded in the early 1800s to cater to, and protect the oblivious world from, gifted individuals. here, they learn not only the average school subjects, but how to best use their abilities. later Asher University followed, where students can seek to hone their skills. the true power of the gifted is rarely witnessed. legends tell of state-wide storms, massive fireballs, apocalyptic floods, and mountains moved.
lately, legends also tell of gifted with special abilities. those that can control no element, but instead bend the very shadows to their will. those that shape metal, a feat which no earth gifted has ever been able to do. surely these are just tall tales, myths and urban legends.
