Asher School of the Elements is a boarding school and university for the "gifted" - the secret subset of the population that is capable of controlling one of five elements. Fire, earth, air, water, and electricity. The gift is usually a hereditary one, although occasionally the gifted can pop up in otherwise normal families. Asher itself is a remote city located along the coast of Washington state, populated entirely by the gifted and their families.

Drake has two very different sides to him. Due the teasing and bullying he has endured because of his persistent stutter, he very rarely speaks unless he is in a safe space surrounded by people he cares about and who care about him. Around the general populace of the academy, he seems to be a quiet, shy boy with little interest in socializing. It really couldn’t be farther from the truth. He wants to make friends, but because of past experiences he is extremely hesitant to allow people outside of his family close. It is extremely difficult to gain Drake’s trust enough for him to actually speak to you and he tends to communicate with strangers and acquaintances in nonverbal ways if he can help it, and if he can’t he keeps things short and to the point. However, for those that he does come to trust, he is just as talkative as the average teenager.
He is quite intelligent and it’s reflected in his grades. He quite enjoys school and learning new things and is a very dedicated student. He even tutors some of his cousins on occasion when they’re having trouble. He has a kind heart and desire to help others, but his stutter brings with it an insecurity and lack of self confidence and so he doesn’t always offer a helping hand out of fear of rejection, even if he feels intensely guilty about it later. He is quite a sensitive boy and does not take criticism well. He also tends to be a bit too hard on himself when he fails at something. As is so common with Earth gifted, Drake has a love of nature and is particularly drawn to animals. Where caring for plants or animals is involved, he has endless amounts of patience, and he appreciates the fact that talking isn’t necessary to form bonds with such creatures.
HISTORY
Drake comes from a large family consisting mostly of Earth gifted, though other gifted or even non-gifted have married into the family, and a decent amount of Water gifted have been born into it as well. The Thorne family is well established in Asher, though they actually live quite a ways out of town on a vast apple orchard. They aren’t exactly rich, but they are decently well off from their apple business and several decently sized homes have been built on the property over the years as the family expanded.
Drake grew up an only child, complications with his birth leading to his mother not being able to bear any more children, but it never really felt as though he were any only child as he had many cousins of similar age to play with, all living together on the orchard complex. From a young age he took to the work on the orchard like a fish to water, his natural skills with plants readily apparent and it was no surprise to anyone when his Earth gift was confirmed. However, from the time he started talking, which was a tad late by normal standards, it was apparent that he had a speech impediment. Though his parents found him a speech therapist and it did help a little over his earliest years as he learned to speak, his stutter never left him completely. While his family didn’t seem to mind, when he started school, unrelated children were far less kind. He began to withdraw from the teasing that started almost immediately when he entered school, fortunately his parents quickly pulled him out of the class before the teasing could cause too much lasting damage. His mother decided to homeschool him from then on.
However, with all of his cousins attending normal school, Drake began to feel quite left out and conflicted. He quite vividly remembered the teasing, but he also wanted to be with his cousins and share in their experiences with them. His parents allowed him to try normal school once more when he reached middle school age, and initially it seemed to be going okay. He made a few friends outside of his cousins that didn’t seem to mind his stutter, but unfortunately a few of the meaner children finally locked onto him as a prime target and the teasing he had experienced in elementary school became outright bullying. Though his friends and cousins stood up for him, eventually his parents pulled him out of school again after a fight broke out between him, a few of his friends, and his tormentors. His mother resumed his homeschooling.
Only this time he felt even worse about it. He had enjoyed being with the friends he’d made, enjoyed learning alongside is cousins, and now he was all alone again. He pleaded with his parents to let him go back the next year, but they refused, afraid he would get into another fight. He was their only child, after all, and they couldn’t imagine allowing him to go back to a place something horrible might happen to him. Eventually, with the help of his cousins, he convinced them to let him try again come high school. He wanted to attend the academy more than anything. This time when he went back, he kept his head down and tried to just blend in. He became the ‘quiet kid’, because if he didn’t talk, no one would know about his stutter, and no one would make fun of him or bully him for it if they didn’t know about it. He managed to get through his freshman year without drawing any real negative attention to himself, unfortunately it also meant he didn’t really make any friends and generally just stuck with his cousins. He would really like to start making some new friends in his sophomore year, but he’s also afraid of putting himself out there and drawing the wrong people to him so his parents pull him out of school again.
