Asher School of the Elements is a boarding school and university for the "gifted" - the secret subset of the population that is capable of controlling one of five elements. Fire, earth, air, water, and electricity. The gift is usually a hereditary one, although occasionally the gifted can pop up in otherwise normal families. Asher itself is a remote city located along the coast of Washington state, populated entirely by the gifted and their families.

PERSONALITY
To call Jack "fiery" would be cliche, but accurate. Not that she's rude, or unkind, but she is temperamental and quick to anger when pushed. This is sometimes a surprise to those who haven't known her long, as she is usually quiet and reserved, almost somber. She also is rarely afraid to speak her mind if it isn't really what people want to hear, which is both a blessing and a curse. Jack is at least a little more merciful to her friends, if they can't handle it and if what they don't know won't hurt them. She isn't really a people person, instead preferring her own company or the company of animals. Jackelyn finds small talk bothersome, and fake friends to be of little value. Although she is generally more serious than the average seventeen-year-old, she knows how to party - she doesn't do so frequently, but when she does there is a decent chance of disaster. She accomplishes a school-life balance by going all out on either, whenever she gets the chance, at times neglecting her studies to adventure and have fun. Sometimes, a little too much fun. On the flip side, when she's in a rut, she becomes a recluse outside of class (but at least she gets mostly A's when she does.)
HISTORY
Born all the way over in New Orleans, Jack spent her earliest years with her mother and older half sister, Persephone. They didn't have much - their mother worked two jobs to keep them afloat but suffered from a gambling problem, and their father had left the scene when Jack was a baby. Despite setbacks, things were mostly peaceful. The two sisters were close, and Persephone practically raised her baby sister.
Things had a tendency to catch fire around Jackelyn. She was a little pyromaniac before she discovered her true potential, and could never be left unattended with a lit candle. However, as she got older, it became increasingly obvious she didn't need a lit candle. Or a candle at all. By third grade, she could hardly be around other children. Her intense temper tantrums tended to result in spontaneous combustion. Jack was taken out of school for the safety of those around her, and she herself was scared. She didn't understand what was so different about herself, but she knew fire was supposed to be dangerous... even if it never had been for her.
It was about this time that her father returned. Possibly tracked down by Jack's mother, possibly alerted by some other forces in control of the gifted, or maybe he returned on his own, she isn't really too sure. Either way, she and her belongings were on a road trip to Washington with only three days warning. It was, understandably, difficult. She had never met this man before, this man who wanted her to call him Dad. He told her all about the gifted people, about the elements, and she learned the basics on their little road trip. She missed her sister terribly, but it seemed that their mother wanted nothing to do with leaving their home and the life she had built for herself. Even if it meant abandoning her youngest daughter.
Jack grew close with her dad as time passed. Without her mother in the picture, he was actually a good guy. He took her to get ice cream, he took her shopping, he let her paint his nails and they played catch. More importantly, he did his best to teach her how to control her abilities, with limited success - her father's element is water. He often serves as a calming force to her wicked temper. More importantly though, he is the parent she needed. Someone who cares about her, and does his best to be there for her, even if she is immensely difficult.
