Asher School of the Elements is a boarding school and university for the "gifted" - the secret subset of the population that is capable of controlling one of five elements. Fire, earth, air, water, and electricity. The gift is usually a hereditary one, although occasionally the gifted can pop up in otherwise normal families. Asher itself is a remote city located along the coast of Washington state, populated entirely by the gifted and their families.

Mal's most defining characteristic to those who know him well, is that he's an anxious mess - always prepared for the absolute worst case scenario, no matter how unrealistic it may be. Though he does keep it well hidden around those who don't know him well. He's frequently described as a "sweet guy," understanding and highly empathetic, and an incredibly thoughtful friend. Malachite gives small gifts to those he considers friends, and enjoys doing favors for others, which unfortunately means he sometimes gets walked all over or taken advantage of. Speaking up for himself is not something he's good at, but wriggling passively out of situations he'd rather not be in is one of his specialties. He, somewhat surprisingly for a gifted student of Asher, has a crippling fear of fire.
He finds he rarely seems to fit in with others, but at least among his element, he feels at home. He embodies a common attitude among water students, being a flexible and passive force at times. When needed, however, Malachite can be quite the imposing figure. Where he fails to defend himself, he is quick to defend others. In class, he is just as quiet as always, but surprisingly enough a helpful leader figure with a gift for tutoring and explaining things. Not that he would look like the A+ type, based solely on his appearance, but Malachite has consistently excellent grades with minimal effort. On the other hand, he becomes quickly frustrated when things don't come easily to him at first. Luckily, his passions do come easily to him, as he is a devoted lover of the arts and a talented writer, singer, artist, guitarist, and pianist. (The stereotype of the tortured, depressed artist is a little on the nose.) Just don't pick him first for nearly any sport! Not only is he incredibly clumsy, but he's far too polite for organized sports.
HISTORY
Malachite was actually born in Asher, to a pair of gifted parents. Their family was a well-off one. They don't live in a great big house worth several million dollars, mostly not to show off, but as a child Mal got to enjoy a massive backyard with elaborate gardens, maintained by his parents (an earth gifted mother and a water gifted water) as well as their large koi pond. To this day he has fond memories of reading books alone surrounded by hibiscus and the most gorgeous lilies and orchids he had ever seen. His mother is a painter, a very well known one at that, who instilled her love of art in her son. His father, on the other hand, was an old-school rocker who never left the early 90's. Leather jackets, piercings, tattoos, craft beer and bass guitar - that's Malachite's dad in a nutshell. He inspired his son to take up music, an endeavor that was not difficult at all and seemed to come naturally to him.
To say he had a privileged life would be a lie, though. Mal's older sister, Micah, has been a ghostly presence over their lives since day one. A fire gifted, Micah naturally leaned towards destruction, which wouldn't have been a problem except that she loved destruction. The usual ability of water to quench fire doesn't seem to work on Micah at all, particularly when she is in one of her frequent rages. The family had nearly lost their house and son to her explosive (literally) outbursts multiple times before she was sent away to live in another gifted community, one with a more authoritarian style that could keep Micah confined and medicated. She's been mostly just a name uttered in fearful hushed whispers since then, but every now and again she pops up, having been let loose for a time to "visit her family." Or in other words, torture them.
Now that he spends most of his time in Asher Academy, he feels a little better, though he's still a fearful boy. Fire in particular frightens him. Where most water students make it quite difficult for fire students to use their abilities, Malachite seems to have little effect on them. His grades are excellent and he is generally well-liked, even if he himself doesn't really believe he is.
